Use Images as Banners

Images used for the banner sliders have unique dimensions and they will have less height than normal photos taken by a camera or a phone. The banner images used by the sliders are 1200 pixels in width by 420 pixels in height. While this short height may seem like a difficult restriction for some images, it is designed this way so that when a page loads for viewing the banner does not dominate the page and allows for the visibility of the initial page content.

Any image that is uploaded to use as a banner is first reduced in width and secondly the height is cropped. Cropping is a process where a portion of the image will be removed.

Help document image

Before uploading an image, you can choose the type of crop you would like to perform. The default "Center Crop" will remove a portion from the top and the bottom leaving the center of the image intact. The "Top Crop" choice will allow the top portion of the image to be left intact for viewing, while the "Bottom Crop" allows the bottom portion to be retained. If you are unsure which to choose, feel free to upload your image three times and try to see what crop selection works best for the image.

Not every image will be suitable to be used as a banner image. For instance, if you have a photo of people in two or more rows, you may not have a suitable crop choice to allow for viewing of all the people. Images where the main subjects are located in a region of the image (top, middle or bottom) will be the best to use.

Some suggestions:

  • Take photos with the banner restrictions in mind, where the subject matter is located in a vertical region across the image.
  • Use a photo editing program to modify the image by resizing it and then adding buffer content to the sides. If you upload an image of the exact 1200 by 420 dimensions then no further modifications will be performed on your image.
  • You can also use a photo editing program to create a 1200 by 420 image and then add photos as smaller thumbnail versions along with some text. Some Posts use this method to promote upcoming events.

These last two suggestions will take a person experienced with using this type of software, but there may be someone (or a relative) at your Post who does have this ability.
